Designing Indoor-Outdoor Spaces in a Las Vegas Custom Home: What Works and What Doesn’t Survive Summer

Las Vegas is sold as an outdoor lifestyle, pool, covered patio, desert views. That part is real. What’s also real is that from mid-May through late September, outdoor spaces that aren’t designed for the climate are genuinely unusable between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. A patio that looks stunning in the listing photos becomes a hot box by Memorial Day. Designing indoor-outdoor transitions in a Las Vegas custom home isn’t hard. But it requires making different decisions than you’d make in San Diego or coastal Florida, different overhang math, different glass specs, different thinking about orientation and pool placement.

Quick answer: The two decisions that most affect how usable your Las Vegas outdoor space is are overhang depth (deeper than you think) and where you put the west-facing glazing (less than you think). Everything else is secondary.

Why Las Vegas Indoor-Outdoor Design Is a Different Problem

Coastal indoor-outdoor design is about maximizing the connection to the outside year-round. Las Vegas design is about creating a space that works year-round despite a climate that actively tries to make outdoor living miserable for a third of the year. The design constraint is solar angle plus dry heat. Las Vegas sits at 36 degrees north latitude. The summer sun angle is high, about 77 degrees above the horizon at solar noon on the solstice. That high angle means deep horizontal overhangs block summer sun effectively. In winter, the sun drops to about 30 degrees, slipping under those same overhangs and providing passive solar warmth. The geometry actually works in your favor if you use it.

Covered Patio Depth: The Overhang Math That Creates Actual Shade

Most Las Vegas patios aren’t deep enough. Builders put up 8 to 10 feet of coverage, which looks generous until you’re sitting in it at 3 p.m. in August and the shade line is cutting across your chair. The standard rule: your overhang depth should equal roughly 60 percent of the ceiling height at the outer edge. For a 10-foot ceiling patio, that’s a 6-foot overhang minimum. For real summer coverage from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on a south-facing patio in Las Vegas, I typically spec 12 to 16 feet of depth. That sounds excessive until you sit in it. West-facing patios are harder. The western sun in Las Vegas is low and relentless in late afternoon. Horizontal overhangs don’t block it, you need vertical elements (wing walls, shade sails, mature plantings) or you need to reconsider the location.

Glass Doors That Open Up a Wall: Performance Specs for Las Vegas Heat

Lift-and-slide and pocket glass doors have changed what’s possible in indoor-outdoor design. A 20-foot or 30-foot glass wall that disappears into the structure is genuinely beautiful and genuinely achievable in a Las Vegas custom home.

The specs that matter here are U-value and solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC).

  • U-value measures how much heat transfers through the glass assembly overall. In Las Vegas, you want U-0.25 or lower. Not so much for winter (winters here are mild) but because a high U-value glass conducts conducted heat from the hot frame and glazing on summer afternoons.
  • SHGC measures how much solar radiation gets through the glass. For south-facing glazing, SHGC of 0.25 or lower is good, you want the light without the heat. For north-facing glazing, you can go a bit higher since you’re getting less direct solar.
  • Frame material matters more here than in most climates. Aluminum frames conduct heat fast. Thermally broken aluminum frames (with a plastic thermal break between the exterior and interior aluminum) perform dramatically better. Fiberglass frames are the best thermal performers but add cost.
  • Shading during closed season. Even the best glass doesn’t prevent a west-facing wall of glass from heating your home in July. Interior shades or motorized exterior screens should be planned during the design phase, not retrofitted.

Pool Placement and Afternoon Sun Exposure

Pool placement in Las Vegas is as much a thermal decision as a design decision. A few things that matter: North-side pools get the least afternoon sun exposure, good for reducing water temperature and evaporation, but also less pleasant for swimming in spring and fall. South-side pools get more sun year-round, which is usually what people want, but the east or southeast is often the sweet spot: morning sun warms the water, afternoon shade from the house keeps it comfortable. Pool deck material is where a lot of Las Vegas homeowners get surprised. Concrete decking in direct sun reaches surface temperatures of 130 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit on a July afternoon. Travertine and certain limestone pavers run about 20 to 30 degrees cooler at the same surface conditions because of their lower thermal conductivity and lighter color. This isn’t a trivial difference if you’re walking barefoot from the door to the pool. Pool orientation relative to prevailing winds also affects evaporation. Las Vegas has persistent southwest winds. A pool aligned with the long axis perpendicular to the wind evaporates faster and loses heat faster, useful in summer, a cost consideration in spring and fall.

What Actually Keeps Outdoor Spaces Usable in July

Some things work. Some things don’t.

How Indoor-Outdoor Transitions Affect Your Building Envelope

This is where the architectural decisions and the energy decisions overlap. A 20-foot opening that fully disappears is beautiful. It’s also a 20-foot gap in your building envelope every time it’s open. In Las Vegas, you run the air conditioning. A lot. When you open a large glass wall, the interior conditioning load changes, especially in the evening when outdoor temperatures are still in the 90s. For homes where indoor-outdoor flow is a central design feature, I recommend treating the outdoor space as a conditioned buffer zone: deep overhang, misters on a zone, ceiling fans. That buffer space keeps the temperature at the threshold manageable. For the same reason, I don’t recommend locating the primary HVAC return air near a large operable glass wall. The system will pull hot air across the room every time the door is open. Route your mechanical to the interior side of the floor plan and let the outdoor spaces manage their own climate as much as possible. Indoor-outdoor living in Las Vegas works well when you design for it specifically. Deep overhangs, 12 feet or more, provide real shade. Low-SHGC glass in thermally broken frames controls heat gain through large openings. Southeast pool placement balances warmth and comfort. And treating the covered outdoor space as a buffer zone (with misters and ceiling fans) extends usability from April through October rather than just the mild months.
